As well as being one of the UK’s leading group risk specialists, Unum is also key provider of employee benefits schemes.
It’s also a solid and sizeable insurer. In 2016 Unum protected over 1.4 million people in the UK and settled claims worth some £293 million.*
Accordingly, Unum is likely be in the mix when our advisors are examining the options available to a particular corporate or SME client seeking a group risk solution.
Unum’s portfolio includes group income protection, group life, critical illness, optical and sick pay insurance. These can stand alone or be integrated into a more comprehensive employee benefits package.
We like that Unum offers flexibility and choice in its cover. For example, it’s income protection policy is structured so that employers can pick and choose the type and level of benefits offered. So, the basic benefit may be paid up until a specific age (known as the ‘cover cease age’) or fixed time limit set by the employer.
It’s good too that, regardless of their level of cover, all Unum group income protection scheme members enjoy access to some valuable support services. These include rehabilitation advice and treatments – such as physiotherapy – and the Unum LifeWorks employee assistance programme (EAP).
As well as helping employees, these benefits can assist employers in minimising lost working time as part of an absence management solution.
Having acquired National Dental Plan in 2015, Unum can also now offer company dental insurance. This, the company says, is the flexible benefit employees most request. It also point outs that providing staff with swift access to dental treatment makes sense to employers. It cites research by British Society of Dental Hygiene and Therapy (BSDHT) which found that 415,000 people miss at least one day of work annually through an oral health issue.
As soon as an Unum dental insurance policy is incepted, a scheme member has access to a broad range of benefits. These include cover for pre-existing conditions, such as mouth cancer, treatment that is already planned or pending, dental implants and sports injuries. Scheme members are also free to select a dentist of their own choice.
As a leading company health broker – and having been named in 2016 as Best Group International PMI Intermediary – Chase Templeton has extensive experience not just of Unum’s products, but its service. This is a key factor for our advisors when recommending a company health insurance or wider employee benefits scheme – because how well claims are handled and policies administered really matters.
