A handy jargon buster to help you understand some health insurance terminology.

WAITING PERIOD

Not all insurance policies start from Day 1. Some policies include ‘waiting periods’ – a time frame after taking out the policy where cover is not provided for certain medical conditions or circumstances.

This is usually to ensure that you are not claiming on any pre-existing conditions you had before you took out your plan.

WAIVER OF PREMIUM

An add on that will help to pay your life or critical illness policy premiums should you be sick or unable to work.

WEIGHT LOSS OR BARIATRIC SURGERY

Weight loss surgery, also known as bariatric surgery, is used to help people who are dangerously obese, with BMIs 35-40+.

Most weight loss procedures would not normally be covered by private health insurance, except under very specific circumstances, and you will likely need to provide evidence from your GP as to why you need surgery. Weight loss surgeries could include:

  • Gastric sleeves
  • Gastric bypass
  • Lap gastric bands
