A handy jargon buster to help you understand some health insurance terminology.

HEALTH SCREENING

Private Health Screening or Health Assessments are check-ups on your overall health. They’re used to spot any health issues early on, ideally before they get serious, and can offer great peace of mind if you’re worried about your health.

A private health assessment could include a range of checks; anything from a simple blood test to a full body scan.

They can be offered by Businesses as an Employee Benefit, or booked individually.

HOME NURSING

In some cases, your consultant may decide that your medical support would be better administered to you at home, rather than you travelling into or staying in a hospital – this is called home nursing.

Home nursing could involve anything from having your medication delivered to you, being on an IV drip at home or even undergoing Chemotherapy at home. The majority of health insurance policies that include outpatient treatment will also include home nursing options.

HOSPICE

Hospice is a special way of caring for people who are terminally ill. This can include medical and physical care, as well as emotional counselling for the patient and their loved ones.

Hospice care in the UK is free, so health insurance doesn’t need to include it, however a lot of health insurance policies would donate to a hospice charity if end of life care were needed.

HOSPITAL LIST

Your insurer’s specified list of hospitals where you can receive private medical treatment. Different insurers will offer different lists of hospitals.
