Home Insurance more important over winter months
06 December 2011
Winter time can cause all sorts of trouble for homeowners, with one of the main complaints being frozen pipes.
According to insurance company AXA, the cost of the average insurance claim for a burst pipe is £25,000.
With the number of 'escaped water' claims increasing by 50% in the last two years, thousands of homes have been damaged due to pipe problems.
Another problem for home owners over winter is an increase in burglaries. Burglaries increase over the winter months as thieves take advantage of the cover of darkness while Christmas shopping means you have more to steal. If your home is targeted, you could be left severely out of pocket.
According to research from Churchill, when a home is burgled, the average amount stolen is £3,288.
Steps should be taken to prevent pips bursting and burglars entering your home, such as keeping the heating on a low temperature if you go away, and putting your lights on timers when you’re not at home.
Even if you take steps to prevent burst pipes and burglaries, there is still a chance that the worst could happen, so it's important that you have the right form of cover in place.
Home insurance can ensure that, if your home is damaged by escaped water or you are targeted by burglars, your belongings can be replaced and your property repaired.
According to Direct Line, Britons own an average of £4,000 worth of furniture, £1,800 of jewellery, £1,700 worth of carpets and rugs, £3,000 in electrical goods, £2,000 in white goods and £1,200 worth of garden and garage items
